The higher education community continues to grapple with questions related to using artificial intelligence (AI) in learning and work. In support of these efforts, we present the 2025 EDUCAUSE AI Landscape Study, summarizing our community’s sentiments and experiences related to strategy and leadership, policies and guidelines, use cases, the higher education workforce, and the institutional digital divide.

We’re living through a watershed moment in education. As AI tools become as common as calculators once were, educators are grappling with a fundamental question: How do we assess learning when students can generate polished essays, code, and presentations with a few keystrokes?

The answer isn’t to ban AI or pretend it doesn’t exist. Instead, forward-thinking educators are discovering that this challenge is actually an opportunity to build better, more meaningful ways to evaluate student learning.

Without clear strategies, AI integration risks widening existing disparities and undermining academic standards. The AI Course Compass: A Seven-Phase Framework for Ethical, Equitable, and Adaptive Course Design (AI Course Compass Framework) addresses the critical gap of higher education’s AI integration through a structured seven-phase model that balances innovation with systemic ethics. While existing frameworks like OLC’s AI Strategy, ETHICAL Principles, and ARCHED offer valuable high-level guidance, they frequently lack phased roadmaps, course-level specificity, model-agnostic adaptability, and integrated ethics assurance. This framework provides faculty, instructional designers, and other stakeholders with actionable, course-level guidance for integrating AI tools while preserving pedagogical integrity, equity, and human oversight.

This session walks educators and instructional designers through effective strategies for using AI tools—Custom GPT, image‑based AI, storytelling techniques, and applied learning theories—to craft engaging, high‑quality online course materials.

🔗Using AI to Generate Engaging Course Content

By means of a set of case studies and a survey from 45 countries, it examines the current use of AI as a tool towards sustainable development identifying some areas where action is needed. The results show that the integration of AI in SE has the potential to significantly enhance the learning experience by providing personalized instruction and facilitating interactive simulations that deepen students' understanding of complex environmental issues. In addition, AI tools can increase student engagement through personalized learning paths and real-time feedback, fostering a more interactive and immersive educational environment that encourages critical thinking and problem-solving.
