Practicum & Internship Training Programs
Health Science Practicum Program
The TAMU-CC University Counseling Center (UCC) offers practicum placement opportunities for students in the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program. This is an unpaid, one-semester practicum placement for final semester seniors.
Health Science Practicum (HSP) students will work with the UCC Clinical Case Manager to identify, research, develop, and implement education and outreach activities for the campus community. Opportunities may also be available for community at-large engagement, UCC workshop development, marketing, and social media expansion. Outreach projects should support the goals of the UCC and the needs of the campus community and partners. The HSP program fosters and encourages professional growth in an integrated mental health care setting.
Due to potential conflicts of interests, students are not eligible who have received individual or group counseling at the UCC within the past academic year.
Fall/Spring HSP Students should start their hours before the second week of classes. Summer HSP students should start within the first week of classes.
HSP Students will receive one hour of scheduled supervision per week with the UCC proctor.
HSP Students are expected to complete all projects and tasks in a timely manner and under the supervision of the UCC proctor. Midterm and Final evaluations provided by the BSHS course will reflect the work as completed.
Due to COVID-19, some projects may be offered remotely. HSP Students should have reliable internet access and a laptop or other device.
Students interested in applying for the HSP practicum placement should email their request and an updated resume to ana.salazar@tamucc.edu
Appropriate applicants will be invited to an interview with the UCC proctor. Decisions are typically made within three (3) business days once all interviews are complete.

Masters & Doctoral Clinical Training Program
The TAMU-CC University Counseling Center (UCC) training programs offer two-semester practicum and internship placements for masters & doctoral level graduate students training to become clinicians. We utilize a Practitioner-Scholar training model to provide trainees of varying levels an atmosphere that is developmentally sensitive, growth oriented, and professionally supportive. Experiential and didactic learning opportunities assist trainees in further defining their theoretical orientation, facilitate the rapid acquisition of basic and advanced therapeutic skills, and provide the clinical knowledge, skills, and confidence to become a successful independent practitioner.
Please note, due to potential conflicts of interests, the UCC does not consider applications from students who have received UCC individual or group services within the past academic year.
Our training program has been designed for students embarking on their 2nd semester of practicum or training with either the psychology or counseling graduate programs and meets requirements for a variety of licenses (e.g. LPA, LPC, Psychologist).
To ensure our program meets both academic & licensure expectations, we ask the following of our trainees:
- Trainees must be embarking on their 2nd semester of practicum or internship training within either the psychology or counseling graduate programs.
- Trainees commit to a two-semester placement with our program, typically consisting of the Fall and Spring semesters.
- Trainees complete 15-20+ hours weekly on site during UCC business hours (Monday to Friday, 8-5p).
- Trainees must be earn hours on-site or at UCC sanctioned outreach activities for at least 13 weeks during the semester.
-
Trainees must be on-site to provide services through both in-person and telemental health modalities while the TAMUCC campus remains open for in-person courses.
-
Trainees first week on site is devoted to a mandatory orientation & on-boarding process. Trainees should plan for a flexible on-site schedule during this first week to accommodate the orientation.
At times the UCC may be able to accommodate trainees needing a secondary site or summer placements. These requests are considered on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the UCC Training Coordinator for more information.
