Alumni updates by department
Dr. Elida Balboa-DeLeon (2021) and Dr. Gina Vilches (2021) recently presented their accepted scholarship at the 2022 Southwest Educational Research Association Conference in New Orleans. Dr. DeLeon’s paper, Attending to Portraiture From a Social Distance, was co-authored by Dr. Bazner and Dr. Maxwell. Dr. Vilches paper was co-authored by Dr. Maxwell and Dr. Cervantes and entitled, Grow Your Own: Savvy Approach or Masked Gender Stratification Limiting Rural Superintendent Candidate Pools?
Gregory-Portland ISD’s Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance, Dr. Ismael Gonzalez III, was honored with the Prestigious RISE Award for Leadership from the Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO). Gonzalez graduated with a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from TAMU-CC in the fall of 2021. In addition, he completed the Superintendent Preparation Program at TAMUCC in 2018 and obtained his certification. More details on the award are at this link.
Scott Rogers (Superintendent Preparation Program, 2018) was named to the top job in Brazos ISD at the start of the 2021-2022 school year. Rogers, a graduate of the US Naval Academy, came to public education as a second career following his service in the United States Marine Corps. Prior to accepting the superintendency in Brazos ISD, he served in several school leadership positions, including Executive Director for Curriculum in Red Oak ISD and principal of Rockport-Fulton High School, where he was honored as the TASSP Principal of the Year for Region 2.
Eddie Hesseltine (Superintendent Preparation Program, 2019) assumed the superintendent position in February 2022 in Orange Grove ISD, following a year at the helm of Dime Box ISD in Central Texas. Hesseltine, a Coastal Bend native, formerly served as a district-level administrator in Sinton ISD and athletic coordinator at King High School in Corpus Christi ISD.
In May 2022, John Trejo (MS Kinesiology 2011, BS Athletic Training 2010) and his wife opened a 6,000 square foot strength and conditioning facility in Houston. Since graduating from TAMU-CC, Trejo has trained more than 70 professional baseball players, 150 college athletes, and numerous high school athletes. He recently trained two athletes who were selected in the first round of the MLB draft.
