Why SMTE?
Science, Mathematics and Technology Education
The SMTE program was created to serve the special needs of students who are preparing to become science and/or mathematics teachers in public schools. While the scientific and mathematical principles are no different for these students, the audience they are preparing to work with is significantly different from other pre-professionals, scientists or mathematicians.
There is a growing body of literature on the challenges that future teachers and the faculty that help prepare them face. We will be sharing a suggested reading list here at some point in the future.
On a practical note, the SMTE program in general and this website in particular also has the goal of increasing the number of well-prepared science and mathematics teachers by providing needed information for students. This website is designed to map out the process of becoming a science or mathematics teacher and provide links to information students can use in that process.
