STAAR Series Workshop

Pulling Back the Curtain: Decoding the Secondary ELA STAAR

Join us for this three-part Saturday workshop series aimed at helping teachers figure out how the secondary ELA STAAR works and to develop strategies to help students prepare in the short time left before the exams. Participants may attend any individual session, or can take advantage of the discount for booking all three.

Part 1: "Bridging the Gap between the STAAR Rubric and Student Writing"

Part I involves learning how to analyze the writing rubrics and help students make connections between rubric concepts and their own writing. Parts of this workshop will include special sessions for 7th, 9th, and 10th grades to allow teachers to focus exclusively on the writing task for their grade level.

Part 2: "Recognizing What Writers Do and Why: How to Use Writer's Craft to Solve the Reading Puzzle"

Did you know the reading exam is in part a writing exam? It doesn't require much writing--but understanding writing concepts will help students decode and answer question on the reading exam. We'll explore how to read the passages and answer questions like a writer.

Part 3: Revising and Editing: Focusing on What Matters Most

The revising and editing sections are difficult for students and teachers alike. We'll help teachers analyze the questions to determine how to focus their teaching in the weeks before STAAR to get the most bang for the buck in a limited time frame.

Cost: TBA. Contact CBWP for information about group discounts.
