The dive program is intended to train our employees who are required to dive as part of their job function. Only those currently working on TAMU-CC projects are eligible to receive dive training. Contact dive@tamucc.edu to see if you qualify for training.

Backplate/Wing Configuration

Occupational diving is professional diving. Backplate and wing configurations offer optimum balance, level, trim, and are much more streamlined compared to traditional recreational jacket configurations. Students will string up their own rig and learn how to size and configure it for optimal performance. Course completion is required before you will be allowed to dive backplate/wing configurations on TAMU-CC dive operations.

Learn how to select and setup a rig to meet the demands of occupational diving including: streamlining for performance, proper hose lengths/routing, how to adjust for optimal balance, level, and trim, cylinder buoyancy characteristics, and recreational practices to avoid. No dangling gear!

DAN Diving First Aid for the Professional Diver (DFA Pro)

DAN's Diving First Aid for Professional Divers (DFA Pro) course is designed for commercial, professional, aquarium and scientific divers, providing first-aid knowledge and skills specific to these work environments. DFA Pro is comprised of modules from five separate courses; First Aid/CPR/AED, Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries, Neurological Assessment, and First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries. DFA Pro meets U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines for workplace CPR and first aid. Required to be a part of any TAMU-CC dive operation.

Decompression Theory, Application, and Management Tools

Forget how to use dive tables or how to setup your dive computer? Learn how to properly plan and execute your dive safely while giving yourself as much bottom time as needed. Learn how breathing gas effects the body, how dive table and computer algorithms were created, and why our understanding of decompression theory is still being developed.

Currents, cold water, low visibility, pollution, and obstinate sea life all can be impediments to accomplishing your dive tasks. Learn how to compensate for these conditions and which equipment and diving practices work best in each environment that you may face.

Welcome to the TAMU-CC Dive Program! This orientation session will give you everything you need to know about the regulations of Scientific Diving, TAMU-CC dive procedures, training requirements, and diving opportunities. Take this lecture first before continuing on to other dive training.

Dry Suit Diver

Want to stay warm? Want to extend your scuba diving season? Then dive dry. A dry suit seals you from the water and keeps you comfortable, even in surprisingly cold water. There is incredible diving in the world’s cooler regions and in some areas, conditions are even better in colder months. Becoming a dry suit diver allows you to expand your boundaries and dive more places, more often. Required to use dry suits for TAMU-CC diving operations.

Enriched Air Diver (NITROX)

The gas mixture typically used by divers is air. Increasing the amount of oxygen in the air breathed can allow divers to extend no decompression limits allowing longer dives with less nitrogen loading. Divers are permitted to use special procedures and tables or Nitrox computers to dive air mixtures which are enriched with oxygen up to a maximum of 40%. This course covers these procedures and focuses heavily on tables and dive computers for basic calculations. Required to dive Nitrox under TAMUC-CC dive operations.

Full Face Mask

Working divers, such as commercial and public safety divers, use full face masks because they protect the eyes and nose from contaminants in the water, provide comfort in cold water, and allow for voice communication. Because full face masks allow you to breathe from your nose, they are also beneficial for those who have difficulty using standard scuba masks. Required to use full face masks for TAMU-CC diving operations.

Hookah Diving

Hookah diving is simplified type of surface supplied diving that connects the diver's breathing supply to the surface. This diving mode is quick, simple, and streamlined, allowing divers who perform frequent shallow dives to accomplish their tasks with minimal setup and breakdown. Divers will learn operational components of hookah diving, how to properly tend a diver, and emergency procedures.

Rescue Diver

This course teaches divers to respond to common emergencies encountered by divers and their buddies. This course is differentiated from others by focusing on and simulating as closely as possible, real world circumstances. This course is a prerequisite for any professional level training and required for TAMU-CC Scientific Diving certification.

Scientific Dives

Data is gold to scientists. Learn how to accurately collect data underwater and employ a range of sampling methods. This course also covers permits and regulations for collections, the various dive gear that may help you achieve your goals and how to incorporate your dive training to be an accurate and efficient underwater scientist.

Underwater Navigator

This course covers the principles of compass use underwater, the use of natural terrain features for navigation and other methods of coupling natural and compass navigation. The end goal is a set of skills that will allow the diver to always know where they are underwater, and more importantly, how to find their way back to the boat or exit point.
