Island University Hosts Largest Commencement Ever with 1,141 Graduates
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will graduate 1,141 students during its Spring 2018 Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 12, making this the largest Islander commencement ceremony to date.
The two ceremonies, hosted at the American Bank Center, will be held at the following times:
10 a.m. – College of Liberal Arts and College of Science and Engineering
2 p.m. – College of Business, College of Education and Human Development and College of Nursing and Health Sciences

During the ceremonies, two Outstanding Graduates, who were nominated by their respective deans, will walk the stage. They include:
Miles Segler, a first-generation college student who is earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, is only the fourth student to obtain a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from A&M-Corpus Christi. Segler is on a mission to help people realize that scientific discoveries and engineering technologies are just as important as the arts in the shaping of our society. In fall 2018, Segler will attend the University of Texas at San Antonio for a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering with future aspirations to further space exploration research and technology. Clarissa Lara, who is earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, was drawn to the nursing profession because of the personal connections she saw while watching her mother work as a nurse. She believes that a “good day” as a nurse is one where you enrich the lives of those around you and make a positive impact on patients. While at the Island University, Lara maintained a 4.0 GPA through the rigor of nursing school due to her personal drive to succeed and assistance from mentors and fellow students. After graduation, Lara hopes to work in an intensive care unit before one day returning to school to pursue a master’s degree. To read more, click here.
The commencement speaker is Elaine Mendoza, who is serving her second consecutive term as Vice Chair of the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. Mendoza is founder, President, and CEO of Conceptual MindWorks, Inc., a biotechnology and medical informatics company located in San Antonio, and is involved in many initiatives regarding the expansion of educational opportunities, health care and economic growth, both locally and nationally.
