Academic Advising
Our goal is to provide accurate and timely information to students, them to fully utilize the resources at the University, make constructive course selections and graduate in a timely manner. We offer academic advising by appointment, please call our office to schedule an appointment. All advisors also hold weekly walk-in hours for general questions to accommodate various schedules. Advisors are here to assist you! We want to answer your questions so please feel free to ask them. if your advisor does not know an answer, he/she will find the answer for you or direct you to the correct person. Some students find it helpful to write a list of questions to ask their advisors.
Meet With Your Advisor Regularly
We recommend that students meet with their advisor at least once a semester.
Make An Appointment
Appointments allow you and your advisor to have 30 minutes of uninterrupted conversation. It also allows the advisor to be completely prepared, with your file, when you meet. As a courtesy please call if you know you will not be able to keep your appointment or if you will be late. Generally, if you are more than 15 minutes late you will be asked to reschedule.

Know Your Student Identification Number
Your student identification number will begin with an A and is 9 characters long. You may hear this number referred to as your "A number" . Records are no longer kept by the social security numbers so please have your ID number with you.
Keep Deadlines in Mind
There are deadlines for registering, dropping, and paying for courses. There are also deadlines for applying for graduation. Most deadlines may be found on SAIL. Please keep them in mind and make your advising appointments accordingly.
Become Familiar With Your Degree Audit
This will allow you to register for the correct courses and to calculate how many hours you have remaining. If you don't understand any part of it, please ask your advisor to explain.
Complete Paperwork For Signatures
If you need paperwork signed by your advisor (e.g. financial aid appeal forms, military graduation plans, insurance documents, etc) please make sure that they are complete before the appointment. Or, we can also help you complete them during your appointment if you are not sure how. But, as a rule, we will not sign blank forms.
These are the general requirements to receive a degree from TAMU-CC. Please keep in mind that these are the minimum requirements and that your particular major may require additional coursework. For more information about specific major requirements, please visit the College of Liberal Arts Undergraduate Programs page.

UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS
Total Hours
The total hours required will depend on your specific program. At a minimum, 120 semester hours must be completed successfully for the baccalaureate degree. Some curricula or combination of fields require more. No remedial coursework may apply toward the degree.
Upper-division Hours
A minimum of 45 semester hours of upper-division credit (3000 - 4000 level) is required for the baccalaurete degree.
Hours in Residence
The term "residency" is defined as "coursework completed at the degree granting institution." To be granted a degree from TAMU-CC, a student must complete 36 upper-division semester hours from this university. Additionally, a student must complete 12 semester hours in the major at this university to be granted a degree.
Grade-point Average
A minimum grade-point average of 2.0 ("C") on a 4-point scale for all work completed at this University is required for graduation. In addition, a minimum grade-point average of 2.0 ("C") is required in all courses taken in the student's declared major field of study and in all courses taken in any declared minor field of study for conferral of a degree.
Specific academic programs may require a higher GPA in the major. Please refer to the university catalog for additional information.
General Education Requirement
To fulfill the general education requirement, a student must successfully complete the University Core Curriculum (or the equivalent) and meet the foreign language and computer literacy requirements. In addition, all students who enter the University as full-time first-year students must complete the First-Year Seminar requirement.
COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS REQUIREMENTS
Major-study Requirements
A student must earn a minimum of 30 semester hours in the major field of study, not including any coursework taken as part of the University Core Curriculum Program. At least 18 of these 30 hours must be upper-division (3000 - 4000 level) courses. Specific course and major-study hour requirements for each discipline are given in the discipline course listing section of the catalog. Some curricula or combinations of field (i.e Social Studies or Language Arts) require more. Please consult that section of university catalog for specific requirements which must be met for each discipline major.
College Language Requirement
Two (2) semesters of study with passing grades in a single foreign language at the college level are required for students majoring in degrees in the College. Students must complete COSC 1315 or approved substitution for computer literacy.
Note: Graduation Under a Particular Catalog
Students are responsible for knowing and understanding all requirements for graduation set out in the catalog in which they first received credit from this University. Provisions of each catalog must be completed with six (6) years of the date of the catalog chosen.
These provisions are subject to the restriction that the University still offers programs and required curriculum described in the catalog. Please contact your academic advisor for additional information.
- Apply for graduation the semester before you plan to graduate. Please call 361-825-3466 to schedule a graduation clearance appointment. For BAAS students please call 361-825-5931 to schedule a graduation clearance appointment.
- Verify that Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has received all of your academic transcripts from other institutions.
- Meet the minimum academic standards. Please note that these requirements are only the minimum and your degree plan may require additional coursework or a higher GPA. Check with your advisor for specifics.
- 120 hours of coursework
- 45 hours of upper-level coursework (3000 - 4000 level)
- 36 hours of upper-level coursework at TAMUCC
- 12 hours of upper-level coursework in your major at TAMUCC
- 2 semesters of a single foreign language (there may be exceptions for BFA, BM and BAAS students).
- Computer literacy. This may be met through a college or high-school course.

Should I make an appointment?

When in doubt it is best to make an appointment. Advisors will work with your schedule to find an appointment time that works
How often should I see my advisor?
We recommend that you see your advisor at least once a semester. We can verify that you are on the right track to graduation.
What happens if I am late to my appointment?
We may ask you to reschedule if you are more than 15 minutes late to the appointment
REGISTRATION
How do I register?
You should meet with your faculty mentor and / or academic advisor to decide which classes you will take. You may register at the Student Service Building or online through SAIL
What is a registration hold?
A registration hold will prevent you from registering from courses and from obtaining official transcripts.
How do I get a hold lifted?
You will need to determine which department has initiated the hold and contact them. These are the most common:
- Bursars: Please contact the Business Office at 361-825-2600. This is a financial hold.
- CASA: You will need to meet with your peer mentor. Please contact the CASA at 361-825-2893.
- TSI: You will need to speak with a Retention Specialist in the CASA.
Can I register if I am on academic probation?
Yes, you may register if you are on academic probation. We strongly recommend that you see your advisor before registering to choose appropriate courses.
How do I know if I am a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior?
SAIL will tell you your status for registration purposes. Here are the guidelines:
Freshmen have 0-29 completed hours.
Sophomores have 30-59 completed hours.
Juniors have 60-89 completed hours.
Seniors have 90+ completed hours.
