Speech and writing assistive technology

Auto-completion

Some form fields allow auto-completion. If you have default answers to form fields (e.g., name, mailing address, phone number), you can select these to complete forms faster.

Software maintainers can also set these up for business forms. Instead of trying to remember how to spell something, they can call up a database of options for you to pick from. You start typing, and it displays potential answers.

Auto-correct

If typing or writing is challenging, auto-correct features help with spelling, capitalization, and sometimes punctuation or grammar.

Grammar and Spelling

Many apps include grammar and spelling plugin options. Some are built-in, like Microsoft Editor in Microsoft 365 applications. These can guide you on grammar, spelling, clarity, and conciseness. Extensions of these apps assist with engagement, persuasiveness, or formality of your writing.

Speech-to-Text

This is also a hands-free option. Devices and software that recognize your speech will turn it into text. This allows you to dictate what you want to say if typing or writing is challenging.

Time Extensions

Consider how long it takes to fill out a form, write an essay, or respond to a message with alternate input devices.

If someone is taking a quiz or needs to respond under a time limit, give them "time and a half" (1.5 times the limit) or the ability to regularly extend the time.
