The Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies minor is hosting the inaugural “Women, Gender, and Culture Symposium” to celebrate Women’s History Month. The symposium will consist of a film screening and discussion followed by a day-long series of panel presentations and roundtable discussions by undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and community members in the Coastal Bend region. The event encourages participants, especially men, to put on high-heeled shoes as they visit university and community organizations that promote women's health and well-being. This light-hearted yet impactful activity aims to promote empathy and understanding of women's experiences, particularly regarding issues such as gender inequality, discrimination, and violence. In the hustle and bustle of our lives, we often immerse ourselves in our individual challenges, sometimes feeling as if we are alone in our experiences. By linking with each other, we not only share our stories but also weave a fabric of trust and support. Community is the catalyst that transforms individual experiences into a collective journey of growth and strength. This workshop aims to challenge that perception, reminding us that behind every question we pose lies the possibility of finding answers, support, and understanding from those around us. Based on dialogue, advice, and words of encouragement, we will design and print a collective mural in risograph. Risograph printing is a technique best described as a “digital screen printing.” The process is similar to screen printing but with the convenience of an office copier.
