Student Misconduct Pool

Purpose or Function: The purpose of the Student Misconduct Pool (SMP) is to provide a pool of trained faculty, staff, and students who are eligible to adjudicate high-level student misconduct cases on individual Student Misconduct Hearing Panels, including but not limited to student sexual misconduct.  In addition, the SMP will be charged with rendering an outcome regarding a student’s request for an appeal, except for appeals that are academic in nature.  Student Misconduct Hearing Panels may be convened year around, including summer.

When serving on Student Misconduct Hearing Panels, members of the SMP will determine whether a student has committed a violation under the Student Code of Conduct and, if needed, recommend appropriate sanctions. Due to the nature of this function, members of the SMP are required to attend mandatory training which incorporates appropriate adjudication methods when hearing student misconduct cases and appeals.

Membership: The Associate Vice President & Dean of Students and the Director of Student Conduct will serve as co-chairs and will have standing appointments to the SMP. Other membership will be based on recommendations by the college/school deans/directors for faculty members, vice presidents for staff members from their respective divisions, and the Dean of Students Office for student members. Due to the nature of this function, final determination of faculty and staff eligibility to serve on the SMP will be made by the Dean of Students Office in consultation with the Office of Employee Development and Compliance Services.

The dean/director of each academic college/school will recommend two (2) faculty members to serve on the SMP. Both tenured/tenure-track and fixed-term faculty are eligible to serve on the SMP. Faculty appointments will be for a two-year term ending May 31st. Due to the nature of the service, faculty members should be available for service year-round, including summers, during their terms

Each Vice President will recommend two (2) full-time staff members from their division to serve on the SMP. Staff appointments will be for a two-year renewable term ending on May 31st.

Student Conduct & Advocacy through the Dean of Students Office will select five (5) students to serve on the SMP. Student appointments will be for one-year terms ending on May 31st. Student Conduct & Advocacy will coordinate obtaining appointments for vacant positions. Student, faculty, and staff appointments may be renewed for another term, pending approval from Student Conduct & Advocacy.

For questions regarding interpretation of appointments and terms for SMP, please contact the Student Conduct & Advocacy.
