Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi held an Engineering Graduating Seniors Recognition Reception on May 19, 2023. At the ceremony, groups of students were given awards, three based on their capstone project and three based on their capstone presentation. Students worked on their capstone projects for two semesters before presenting them to a panel of judges.
“Capstones require the students to utilize all the skills and knowledge that they have learned throughout their curriculum, including everything from math, science, engineering, and technology to come together to solve a problem,” said Dr. Ruby Mehrubeoglu, TAMU-CC Electrical Engineering Professor.
Daniel Armstrong ‘23, mechanical engineering major, and Matthew Salas ’23, mechanical engineering technology major, won second place in the division for their project “IoT Enabled Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) System.” They created a system that allowed aerial and ground vehicles to work autonomously and complete their task of moving packages throughout a test bed environment. The main hardship the team overcame was communication, more specifically, making sure every group member felt heard and understood.
A group that included Selena Thornton ’23, electrical engineering major, won first place in the presentation division for their project “Aquatic Robot for Debris Removal.” They created an aquatic debris detection removal robot that went out in Corpus Christi Bay to collect trash. The reason they chose this project was because they wanted to protect the local ecosystems and marine life, especially since the bays are a big attraction for Corpus Christi.
