Island University Ranked Among Best Schools in Texas for Online Education by Study.com

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – With 23 degrees wholly obtainable online and a multitude of web-based courses available, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has a strong commitment to quality online education. As a result of this commitment, the Island University ranked No. 23 on Study.com’s list of best online colleges and schools in Texas. Ranking decisions were made based on affordability, quality of education, and support services.

“Our faculty work diligently to provide online academic experiences that are equivalent to that of a classroom setting,” said Dr. Michelle Singh, Associate Vice President of Teaching and Learning Technologies at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. “These efforts allow students to engage in course exercises that will prepare them to thrive in the digital society in which we live today.”

At the start of the spring 2020 semester, 14% of Island University students were enrolled in online classes full-time, while 42% of students were taking at least one online course. Online students are able to access rigorous academic content and engage in an online university experience with a schedule that is conducive to their work/life situation while still interacting and connecting with their professor and classmates, Singh said.  

Island University faculty, staff, and administrators recognize the importance of promoting digital literacy skills so that students are globally competitive. This led to the adoption of the I-Know Quality Enhancement Plan, which strives to prepare students to find, evaluate, create, and communicate knowledge using digital technologies –  allowing them to successfully and responsibly navigate the world’s increasingly complex information landscape.

Since Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the University has been diligent in the creation of academic and business continuity plans. It was due to such planning as well as the University’s existing investments into online education that it was so readily able to shift into an online environment in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“While we faced immediate challenges like access to technology and connectivity, our campus community has come together to help our students overcome these obstacles,” Singh said. “The Island University’s online courses have a tenure of success, and they will continue to grow and strengthen their quality student experience so we can continue to thrive online.”
