Island University Makes National List
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A new national list of U.S. postsecondary institutions reveals that Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s efforts to attract more and more students is paying off.
A dramatic spike in the number of student applications since the 2011-12 school year has vaulted the Island University into the top three U.S. postsecondary institutions where student applications are on the rise. The new data analysis list was released by 24/7 Wall Street, a financial news and commentary web site whose content is republished in USA Today, Yahoo! Finance, and The Huffington Post.
“Many of our programs are recognized for excellence, and I think that’s how students are hearing about us. This may be why we’re seeing a rise in the number of applications,” Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi President and CEO Dr. Kelly M. Quintanilla said. “We are working hard to attract students and make sure they know about our quality. We have students from 48 of the 50 states and at least 53 different countries in the world, and we provide excellence in our own backyard.”
The 24/7 Wall Street list notes that the Island University saw a 153.4 percent spike in student applications between the 2011-12 school year and the 2016-17 school year. In 2016-17, the Island University received a total of 12,909 student applications.
At No. 3, The Island University is the top-ranking Texas postsecondary institution on the 24/7 Wall Street list, behind the University of Memphis in Tennessee at No. 2 and Grand Canyon University in Arizona at No. 1.
The list was compiled based on five-year changes in the number of student applications submitted to almost 600 public and private colleges and universities with at least 4,000 applicants in 2011. The data comes from the National Center for Education Statistics within the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences.
“We have incredible programs, nationally and internationally recognized faculty, and a dedicated staff,” President Quintanilla said. “We knew that we were increasing in the number of our applications but to be ranked this way nationally is a pleasant surprise.”
