Expressive Activity Committee

Purpose or Function: The Expressive Activity Committee is a standing committee designed to monitor and/or respond to expressive activities on campus.  The committee will also educate the campus on expressive activities and the legal issues surrounding them.  Potential activities could include free speech, freedom of the press, and other related activities in public and non-public forums as defined in university procedure 41.01.01.C0.01, Use of University Facilities.  Additional information regarding expressive activities is available in university rule 08.99.99.C1, Expressive Activity on Campus.  The committee will seek guidance from the Texas A&M University System Office of General Counsel as appropriate.

Membership: The committee will be chaired by the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students and include representatives appointed by the supervisors of the following areas: University Police Department, Academic Affairs, Athletics, Institutional Advancement, Marketing & Communications, Environmental, Health & Safety, Employee Development and Compliance Services, University Services, and Student Conduct & Advocacy. Each of these members have standing appointments that may be replaced at any time at the discretion of the area supervisor. The Chief Compliance Officer and Island Waves Advisor serve as ex-officio members. One appointed representative from each of the following groups will also be on the committee: Faculty Senate, Staff Council, and Student Government Association. The Faculty Senate representative serves a two-year term. The Staff Council and Student Government Association representatives serve one-year terms. All members are voting members.
