STEM-Tronics Camp

Summer is in full swing at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC)! Every morning, summer camp attendees flood onto campus to learn, grow, and have fun. At STEM-TRONICS, the first of the engineering and computer science summer camps, campers age 10-14 joined Dr. Jose Baca for a week full of learning about robotics, coding, and teamwork.

From June 2-6, campers had three projects to complete: a hot air balloon, a WALL-E robot, and a miniature greenhouse. Throughout the week, they explored mechatronics, automation, and robotics through hands-on activities.

The WALL-E robot was a favorite project among the campers. The robot's frame was made of paper, which each group of students had the opportunity to decorate as they liked. Inside the paper frame was a Micro Bit that the students learned to code in order to control the robot’s mechanics. Once the project was complete, each WALL-E had wheels that spun and heads that turned from side to side.

While WALL-E was a favorite project from the STEM-TRONICS camp, one student said the best part of the camp for him was working as a team to bring the projects to life.

“I loved meeting new friends at camp and making these projects together. Coloring, coding, and building each one was so much fun with my friends,” said a sixth-grade camp participant, Jackson.

STEM-TRONICS was a great time for students to get to know each other, learn more about TAMU-CC, and grow their knowledge of STEM.
