Academic Integrity with Respondus Lockdown Browser + Monitor
What are Lockdown Browser + Monitor?
LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas -preventing students from accessing other applications, websites, or system tools while taking an online exam.
Respondus Monitor is a feature of LockDown Browser that records a student's webcam, screen, and microphone during an exam to help prevent cheating without a live proctor. Students access exams in Canvas as usual and complete a pre-exam setup, including a webcam check. Instructors enable Respondus Monitor within Canvas and review the recorded test sessions afterward for academic integrity.
PLEASE NOTE: LockDown Browser + Monitor works differentlydepending on if the course uses Canvas "New" Quizzes or Canvas "Classic" Quizzes! Carefully review your own Canvas course and the tutorials below.
LockDown Browser is specific to each institution. Students should use only the version provided by TAMU-CC's Division of Information Technology (linked below) for their exams unless instructed otherwise.
Once an exam is stared using the LockDown Browser:
The test opens in full-screen mode and cannot be minimized.
The browser menu is limited to Back, Forward, Refresh, and Stop.
Access to other applications, messaging, screen sharing, and remote desktops is blocked.
Printing, screen capture, copying, pasting, and task switching are disabled.
Students cannot exit until they submit the exam.
The test can only be accessed through LockDown Browser, not other browsers.
Compatible with both Windows and Mac.
OEM Lockdown Browser for tests in a third-party platform (ALEKS, MyLab, etc.)
Your instructor may require Respondus LockDown Browser for tests on third-party platforms. If so, a separate OEM version of the browser will be provided for download. Both versions can be installed on the same device without conflicts.
Installation Instructions:
Windows/Mac: Use a standard browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.) to access the test and download the OEM version. It will launch automatically when the test begins.
iPad/Chromebook: Check if the third-party platform supports your device and contact your instructor to enable this option.
If you are a student, or a 3rd party entity, and already have the Respondus Lockdown Browser installed on your system for an institution other than TAMU-CC:
Download and install the LDB again from the link above.
A pop-up window will appear alerting you that the browser is already installed. Click the "Yes" to install another version.
After clicking the "Yes" button a second pop-up giving the option to "Install Lockdown Browser for a Second Institution" will be presented. Select this option and click the "Next" button.
The rest of the installation will happen automatically and a new "Lockdown Browser (2)" shortcut be added to the desktop as well as in the Start Menu under Start>Programs>Respondus.
It is strongly suggested that the shortcuts for all LDB installations be renamed appropriately for the institution associated with the installation (e.g. TAMUCC-LDB, UNIXYZ-LDB, etc.).
Introduction to Respondus Lockdown Browser + Monitor Instructor Videos:
Instructors cannot testRespondus LockDown Browser in Canvas using "Test Student" mode. If you have questions about your settings, contact dlai@tamucc.edu.
If a Canvas quiz setting is changed after enabling LockDown Browser/Monitor, an error may occur. To fix this, go to the LockDown Browser Dashboard in your course and click "Fix It."
Quizzes imported from Blackboard may have misleading names (e.g., "Requires Respondus LockDown Browser..."). Always check the LockDown Browser Dashboard in Canvas to confirm the correct settings.
