Dr. Jerel Benton Announced as Associate Vice President for Student Success

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi announces Dr. Jerel Benton as Associate Vice President for Student Success. Dr. Benton has served as the Interim Associate Vice President since 2021 and Special Assistant to the Provost since 2019. 

Dr. Benton’s career showcases a strong focus on student success initiatives, diversity and inclusion, and student retention. He has served at various higher-education institutions as Senior Diversity Officer, Director of African American Affairs, Associate Director of University Assessment and Testing, and Minority Retention and Student Success Coordinator. His successes at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi include establishing the Office of Student Success and a new academic advising center, launching the “Finish in 4” campaign and the Math Taskforce, and chairing the Student Success Council.

Dr. Benton completed an EdD at Eastern Kentucky University, a Master of Education at Morehead State University, and an undergraduate degree at Western Kentucky University.

According to Dr. Clarenda Phillips, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, “Dr. Benton is an experienced, equity-minded leader with demonstrated results in achieving student success and well-being outcomes. I am particularly excited about his commitment to develop data-informed strategies and engage collaboratively across the university.”
