Celebrate Islander Homecoming 2020: February 23-29
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Shakas up, Islanders! Celebrate decades of academic excellence, student success, and Islander tradition during Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s 2020 Homecoming, held Feb. 23-29. More than 50,000 alumni are invited to join in with students, faculty, staff, and the public to honor the Islander Spirit and take part in the fun.
“Homecoming represents all Islanders, past and present, each participating in their favorite time-honored homecoming traditions. Whether you graduated from Corpus Christi State University, or your mascot was Tarpie the Tarpon, the Island University is your home,” said Kelly M. Miller, University President.
Make Homecoming a social occasion using the hashtags: #islanderHOCO, #islanderforever, #tamucc, and #BluesdayTuesday. Reconnect with old friends or make new ones during the week-long festivities and be sure to dress the part with the official Homecoming 2020 t-shirts.
On Tuesday, Feb. 25, anyone can become an Islander for a day with the city-wide Bluesday Tuesday proclamation by the mayor of Corpus Christi. Established as a weekly show of support and Islander spirit among students, faculty, and staff, Homecoming aims to expand Bluesday Tuesday to bring in community members and supporters. Stay tuned for details of a Bluesday Tuesday competition for schools, businesses, and Islander fans alike.
On Friday, Feb. 28, the community is welcome to attend Lighting of the I, a symbolic event that gathers Islanders in a show of positive energy.
“While the events throughout the week are always fun, the Lighting of the I is the most highly anticipated,” said Sabrina Garcia, Islander Student Government Association President. “Lighting the I allows us to gather as an Islander Family and showcase the pride we have for our University. The atmosphere of the event definitely helps get everyone fired up for the games on Saturday.”
On Saturday, Feb. 29, celebrate at the traditional tailgate and block party with special guest performer Jake Hoot, Corpus Christi native and Season 17 Champion of NBC’s “The Voice," while generating school spirit before the big games. Show off your shakas at the American Bank Center as your Islander Men’s and Women’s basketball teams fight for Southland Conference supremacy against the Cardinals of University of the Incarnate Word!
