- Learn a New Skill
With your extra time during the break, now is the perfect opportunity to let out your creativity and try something new. This could be learning a new sport, crafting, building something, or even something as simple as playing with a child and entering their world of make-believe. Creativity induces positive health effects, including on the heart. In a recent study, researchers discovered that no matter the artistic experience of the participants, about 75 percent experienced a decrease in their levels of cortisol, a hormone that the body secretes to respond to stress. - Volunteer
Doing something nice for other people not only brings in good karma but also makes those you’ve helped feel good – it’s a win-win. Volunteering leads to a greater sense of community, as well as increased happiness and self-confidence. It also helps build new skills and career experience. Around the Coastal Bend, there are many organizations that would be happy to accept a helping hand. Whether you have a passion for animals or people, there’s sure to be a place for you. One such event where you could volunteer is the Islander Green Team’s Garden Work Day on Thursday, March 14, from 3-5 p.m. at the Antonio E. Garcia Arts and Education Center, located at 2021 Agnes Street. Also, keep in mind that registration is still open for the Big Event, an Island University initiative where the campus comes together for one day to volunteer and express gratitude for the community at large. The event will take place on Saturday, April 13, with registration ending on Friday, March 29.
- Get Ahead on Homework
Now that you’re in a more anxiety-free period, take time to get ahead of the game and break the cycle of stress. Don’t let your schoolwork creep up on you. By starting your assignments earlier, you have more time to plan and tackle them a little each day. Hitting the books sooner also has multiple benefits, including less stress and the option to practice exam techniques. So, even if you were blessed with no homework over the break, use some of this time to get ahead. It could save you from many future headaches.
