Islander Student Day of Service Helps Habitat for Humanity
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – “Community service is such a great way for our students to meet people within the community, but also their fellow Islanders,” said Brandon Mandigo, student activities coordinator in the Division of Student Engagement and Success. “Many of our projects also help students to acquire life skills and knowledge.”
Applying plaster, mudding, and smoothing walls are just a few of the activities a group of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi students plan to do to make their Islander Impact at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This day of service will be hosted by Student Volunteer Connection (SVC) – a student organization devoted to creating ample community service opportunities that are achievable to Islanders with a mission to unite the campus and Coastal Bend communities.
Interested students can still register to volunteer for the day of service until Friday, Feb. 22, at 5 p.m., or register to become a member of SVC, on I-Engage. Students can also register the day of the event by coming to the Turtle Cover parking lot (the event meetup place) at 8 a.m. and filling out the necessary paperwork. All students are welcome to participate.
“We are one community, and we are stronger together,” said Mandigo, SVC advisor. “The community relies on selfless volunteers to come together and lend a helping hand. Volunteers are priceless, and communities would not be able to properly function without them.”
Students can also get involved in the future by participating in an upcoming event like Harvey Saturday on March 3, the Big Event on April 13, or the Earth Day Celebration on April 22. Go to the SVC website for more information on future events.
