External Employment

Paid release time is limited and may only be granted if the work is unpaid, enhances TAMUS’s mission, and does not interfere with job duties. 

All external employment involving foreign entities must be cleared by the university's Export Control Officer and Research Compliance Office prior to approval. This applies to both faculty and non-faculty.

This section pertains to faculty whose external work is directly related to their professional academic discipline, governed under 31.05.01.

• Encouraged when it enhances faculty development and public service.
• Faculty must track and document these activities annually.
• Disclosure of potential conflicts and IP considerations is mandatory.
• Use of system resources must comply with Policy 33.04.01.
• Engagements with foreign entities require export control review and research security clearance before approval.
• Any agreements involving intellectual property must be disclosed and reviewed for TAMUS IP compliance.

External employment forms are to be reevaluated on yearly basis. A new external employment form should be submitted with the new fiscal year on September 1st. 

• Approved requests will expire each Aug. 31
• Continuation is to be resubmitted Sept. 1

• When do I need approval? Prior to beginning any external employment or consulting role.
• Can I use university email? Only minimally and incidentally, per Policy 33.04.01.
• Do I need to report international work? Yes, all foreign engagements require export control review.
• What counts as employment in my discipline? Consulting or services directly tied to your academic expertise.
