Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month (Friday, Sept. 15, through Sunday, Oct. 15), Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is hosting a variety of cultural events on campus and via online platforms. Most of the events are free and open to the public.
Sept. 13 – Windward Review Readings, Open Mic, Book Exchange
University Center Bayview, room 320 | 6-8:30 p.m.
Join us at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13, to celebrate Windward Review Vols. 19 and 20 — “Empathy & Entropy” (2022), “Beginnings & Endings” (2023). This is a jam-packed reading event with writers and artists from both volumes, including Robb Jackson High School Poets. An open mic will follow, so bring your own creative writing or genre-fluid work to share. Also, participate in our bring-one-take-one book exchange — bring an old book of any genre and trade it with another. Windward Review is a student-edited journal that publishes marginalized voices, including local and non-local Latinx writers and artists, youth writers, ALANA, MOGII, and genre-fluid creators. Tres Artistas: A Portrait Show features local artists Monica Marie Garcia, Eugene Soliz, and Mayra Zamora. The exhibition runs Thursday, Sept. 14 to Sunday, Oct. 8 at Antonio E. Sept. 20 – Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day Celebration

Join us as we honor Dr. Hector P. Garcia, local Mexican-American physician, World War II Veteran, and civil rights activist. Dr. Garcia, founder of the American GI Forum, fought for the rights of Hispanic Americans and veterans who were denied housing, medical, and educational opportunities. The program will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the Mary and Jeff Bell Library. During the celebration, the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation will announce a gift to help support an exhibition showcasing the works of Dr. Garcia within the university’s new Arts Building. Part of the Furgason BRAVO! Series, 123 Andrés are Andrés and Christina - the Latin Grammy-winning music duo. Their catchy songs and lively concerts get the whole family dancing and learning, in Spanish and English. Direct from the Bell Library’s breakroom kitchen, award-winning South Texas food blogger Vianney Rodriguez will make some simple, easy-to-recreate dishes and share samples with the audience during “Family, Food, and Friends: In the Kitchen with Vianney Rodriguez.” Rodriguez will also speak to the importance of the three Fs in the Hispanic culture and how pivotal the act of cooking in the kitchen and feasting together is to many Hispanic families.
