Coding, Conservation, and Creativity: STEM-Tronics Camp Inspires the Next Generation of Engineers
The future of engineering is growing through creativity, curiosity, and hands-on innovation.
Hosted by the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi College of Engineering and Computer Science, the STEM-Tronics Camp gave local middle school students the opportunity to explore the intersection of technology, coding, and environmental science through real-world problem-solving.
One of the camp’s standout challenges focused on hydroponics, where students used technology to design sustainable, automated watering systems. Using Crickit robotics boards, young innovators programmed and coded irrigation schedules to help plants receive the right amount of water at the right time.
“Today, we had to find a way to water the plants and make it so the system would pause, allowing the plants to have breaks in between,” said Isabel Rangell, an incoming eighth grader who named the project as her favorite activity of the camp. “I think it’s just an interesting subject. It shows me what it would be like if I was doing STEM-related projects in the future.”
For other campers, the project offered a new perspective on environmental sustainability and the role engineering plays in creating solutions for the future.
“Some things that I just found out today are that hydroponics can help save and conserve water,” shared incoming sixth grader Jaival Desai. “There are many technologies and engineering needed to make hydroponics work.”
Beyond building technical skills, STEM-Tronics Camp helped students connect classroom concepts to potential academic and career pathways.
For Jaival, the experience provided an important moment of discovery as he considers his future in engineering.
“I’ve always wanted to be an engineer, but I just never decided which type of engineer I wanted to be,” he said. “This camp opened my eyes to see that some engineering fields interest me more than others. I like coding more than building because I like working with computers.”
By combining hands-on learning with creativity and exploration, the College of Engineering and Computer Science continues to encourage curiosity, strengthen confidence, and inspire the next generation of STEM leaders.
