Inspiring the Next Generation: STEM Camp Introduces Students to Engineering and Computer Science
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Young students explored engineering and computer science through hands-on activities during STEM Camp at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The camp introduced students to STEM concepts, encouraged problem-solving, and helped them connect their interests to potential careers.
Each day, mentors prepared activities that connected to areas of engineering offered through the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Students explored mechanical engineering by building a car and learned about electrical engineering through activities using copper wiring and LEDs.
“Each activity connected to a program offered at TAMU-CC by the College of Engineering and Computer Science,” said Kimberly Carrejo-Wolcott '19, Outreach Coordinator with the Islander Office of Student Excellence Experience. “The biggest impact was learning how these interactive activities connected to real-life careers.”
As the camp progressed, students became more comfortable with engineering and computer science concepts and more willing to take on challenges and work with their peers.
For Karina Ibarra ’27, a senior biology major specializing in microbiology who served as a camp mentor, one of the most meaningful parts of the experience was watching students discover where their interests could lead.
Near the end of camp, one student asked what area of engineering might be a good fit for him. After learning that he enjoyed drawing and math, Ibarra suggested civil engineering.
“It was just really nice to see him gain an interest and just learn a little more from the camp,” Ibarra said. “There’s always something for everybody.”
The experience also reinforced the importance of introducing students to STEM at an early age. Some campers already participated in robotics clubs, while others were exploring engineering and computer science for the first time.
“To get future people in STEM, you have to start really young,” Ibarra said. “It’s nice to show them specifically where they can fit in, and to get them thinking about it really early on.”
Through hands-on learning and exposure to real-world applications, STEM Camp encouraged students to explore their interests, build confidence, and envision themselves pursuing future opportunities in STEM.
