Steel Dynamics Site Visit

Students from Texas A&M University—Corpus Christi gained firsthand insight into the steel manufacturing industry during a tour of Steel Dynamics in Sinton on April 10, 2026. They explored large-scale steel manufacturing operations, workplace safety practices, and potential internship and career opportunities within the industry.

24 students from multiple academic disciplines, environmental science, chemistry, accounting, finance, and business programs attended. Seven engineering students were also among the attendees, gaining direct insight into real-world applications connected to their fields of study. Transportation for the visit was provided by Steel Dynamics.

During the tour, students explored various sections of the facility and engaged directly with employees and professionals across departments. The visit encouraged networking opportunities and allowed students to ask questions about daily operations, career pathways, and internship opportunities available through the company.

University staff members who attended the tour emphasized the impact of experiential learning opportunities like this on student growth and career readiness.

“Even as staff, this tour was an eye-opening experience,” Nicolette Ramirez, a Career Counselor from the Career & Professional Development Center  shared. “Seeing students engage, network, and thrive in an environment they are passionate about showed just how valuable opportunities like this are for their growth and future careers.”

Ramirez also reflected on the students’ initiative throughout the visit, noting, “It was rewarding to see the students take the initiative and make remarkable impressions for themselves.”

Among the participating students was Alison Tomlinson ’27, who explored several operational areas throughout the facility. During the tour, Tomlinson connected with the environmental team, visited the hot rolling section, observed the process of melting and rolling mixed metals under extreme heat, and learned about central control operations and OSHA safety procedures.

Experiences such as the Steel Dynamics tour continue to strengthen connections between students and industry professionals while preparing Islanders for future careers through hands-on learning and professional engagement.
