Islanders take the gold at the Region Five IEEE Conference
Islanders made waves at the annual Region Five Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Conference in Wichita, Kansas by placing in the top three in multiple competitions.
A team made up of members from the Islander Cyber Society (ICS) took the gold in the Cyber Competition at the annual conference. The team was composed of Dylan Posey ’25, a senior at Texas A&M- Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) majoring in computer science with a concentration in cyber security, and Shelby Carrol ’26, a junior majoring in electrical engineering with a minor in applied mathematics.
The competition they participated in was a Cyber Capture the Flag (CTF) contest. The team raced against eight other teams to be the first to “capture” the encrypted flag by completing a series of challenges and puzzles. They used their knowledge of computer systems and programs to complete each challenge and be the first team to cross the finish line with their flag in hand.
“The Islander Cyber Society is where I gained all my knowledge on how to compete in these competitions and be successful in them,” said Posey. “My biggest piece of advice to Islanders interested in Computer Science is to join ICS.”
The Cyber Society and IEEE provide TAMU-CC students the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in not only their schoolwork but also in diverse opportunities, like this competition.
Other notable achievements from the Region Five IEEE conference include Lindsey LeMaire ’26 and David Leal ’26, who placed third as a team in the Ethics Competition, and Brenden Oller ’25, who placed first in the Presentation Competition.
