Islander Cyber Society
The Islander Cyber Society (ICS) at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) is on a continuous winning streak, and this is only the beginning for this student club. In Fall of 2024, the club was formed and began taking part in cybersecurity competitions. That semester the ICS placed 44th in the National Cyber League competition. Only one semester later, the club jumped up to 13th place in the same competition. On top of that, the team consistently placed in the top 7% or higher in various tournaments throughout the year.
Most of the players had no prior experience in cyber competitions. Team members showed up with a “come, play, learn, and compete” mindset that helped them to achieve these successes.
Beyond competitions, the members of ICS also stand out for their willingness to give back to the community. The club volunteers at the annual StopHackGo, a K–12 event where they work with 6th–12th graders on coding and cybersecurity basics, especially in the context of critical infrastructure. This event gives the members of ICS the opportunity to inspire the next generation of cybersecurity enthusiasts.
The club not only provides students opportunities to learn and give back to the community, but it also encourages students to step out of their comfort zones and take on big challenges. In Spring 2025, ICS had two members of the Women in Cybersecurity team get accepted to speak at the International Women in Cybersecurity conference. They traveled to Dallas and spoke to a room of over 250 people, formed connections with other speakers and conference attendees, and made lasting impressions on industry professionals.
Now with over 120 members from all degree programs, Islander Cyber Society has big plans to continue competing in- and winning- cybersecurity competitions in this new school year.
