Ruby K. Payne, Ph.D., the founder of aha! Process, Inc., is an author, speaker, publisher, and career educator. She is an expert on the mindsets of economic class and on crossing socioeconomic lines in education and work.

Dr. Payne is recognized for her foundational book, “A Framework for Understanding Poverty,” now in its 5th edition. Her book has sold more than 1,500,000 copies, is used in all 50 states, and won the 2014 REVERE Golden Lamp Award for Professional Development. Dr. Payne has collaborated on more than a dozen related books, including “Bridges Out of Poverty,” co-authored with Philip E. DeVol and Terie Dreussi-Smith, which offers strategies for building sustainable communities.

Dr. Payne has helped individuals of all economic backgrounds achieve academic, professional, and personal success. She has trained more than 8,000 people and presented her work to more than 1 million people in North America, Europe, Australia, China, and India. Approximately 70,000 individuals in poverty have gone through the “Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World” program which teaches individuals how to stabilize and grow resources. The company has hard data to indicate that when 10 families-equivalent to approximately 34 individuals-come out of poverty, it is a financial return on investment of over $2 million dollars annually.

Dr. Payne started her publishing company/consulting company in 1994 under the name RFT Publishing. In 2000, the name was changed to aha! Process Inc. The company mission is to improve the lives of individuals in poverty throughout the world and to break the cycle of generational poverty.
