Operatic Expression

Soprano Lauren Rader lived three years in Italy where she was introduced to the country’s romantic language and historic opera houses. Her grandparents also embraced classical music, which she appreciated at an early age. These early musical experiences laid the foundation for Rader, who graduates with honors this summer with her bachelor’s degree in music (vocal performance). In April she took first place honors in the Senior Women’s Vocal Competition at the annual auditions of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, South Texas region, held at the University of Texas-San Antonio. There, the 2007 graduate of Flour Bluff High School presented arias and art songs in different languages and from different musical periods. For each performance, Rader researches the German, French and Italian lyrics to express the song’s emotion to the audience. In addition, she was named a finalist in this year’s Sparkling City Light Opera Emerging Artist Competition, became a co-founder of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s opera/musical scenes program with peer, John Washington IV in fall 2010, and is a member of the South Texas Honor Choir. Recently, she performed as Micaëla in the VivaVoce Production of “Carmen” and as Jennie Parsons in the University Opera Workshop production of “Down in the Valley.” Her next adventure is to study voice during an advanced performance training July 1-31 at Music Theatre Bavaria in Oberaudorf, Germany. After she graduates, Rader will remain in Corpus Christi to teach voice lessons and piano to a dozen students and help conduct choral ensembles in the fall with the Rising Philharmonic Orchestra, a student-led organization and young professional orchestra on the University campus. Rader, who was the recipient of the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Music Scholarship from 2008-2010, says her favorite experience at the University is the sense of family she felt as part of the campus music community and studying under Flicka Rahn, who she says helped her discover her full vocal potential.
