Walks the Talk
Rodney Buckwalter has discovered that much of what he learned at the Island University has helped prepare him for a career in the corporate world. As director of Global Partnerships and Strategic Sourcing for First Data, Buckwalter manages partners with sites in the Philippines, Mexico and the Dominican Republic. On the job, he utilizes his writing, communication and presentation skills; works in teams to collaborate and meet numerous deadlines, all proficiencies he sharpened while in school. Buckwalter, who holds specialized PHR certification in Human Resources and Six Sigma Green Belt Certification for process improvements, received his Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 1998 and his Master of Science in Occupational Training and Development in 2003 from the University and is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of North Texas. Prior to attending the Island University, Buckwalter was a Navy air traffic controller for four years. The alumnus has fond memories as vice president of Lambda Pi Eta, playing Peter in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” serving as founding president of the Island Productions (TV Production Club) and member of the University’s Debate Team. Buckwalter strongly believes that education is important and that the Island University plays a vital role in the success of our community. Four years ago, he became involved with University alumni organizations. He is vice president of the Corpus Christi Area Alumni Club and president-elect of the National Alumni Board. He sings baritone in the Corpus Christi Chorale and plays numerous instruments. On the court, he shows his athletic spirit as a season ticket holder for the Islanders men’s and women’s basketball games. Rodney is married to alumnus Sonya Buckwalter (’94).
