A Half-Century Booster
O.B. Garcia has shown endless enthusiasm for the Island University for more than 50 years. The National Alumni Association president has helped increase the organization's visibility and recruit Islanders. In 2008, the teacher recruitment coordinator was inducted into the University's Athletic Hall of Honor. The San Diego, Texas, native who played college basketball and baseball, is a 1954 graduate of the University of Corpus Christi. He went on to teach math and coach basketball at his hometown high school. His career took off with the Corpus Christi Independent School District when he became assistant principal and principal and was later named President of the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. O.B. has received numerous accolades, but his proudest moment was when the City of Corpus Christi proclaimed May 17, 1985, "O.B. Garcia Day." O.B. has volunteered for the American Red Cross in the Disaster Services field for more than 40 years and has served as board chairman for the local Red Cross chapter.
