The Island University Continues its Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration with Festive Events through October 12

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A festive kickoff, a Hector P. Garcia State Holiday Celebration, a health fair, and a Hispanic Heritage concert series were among the highlights during the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The Hispanic Heritage Month events, which are all open to the public, kicked off September 16 and will continue through Saturday, Oct. 12.

During the kickoff, guests enjoyed a live performance by Xperimento, a multicultural, bilingual band from Miami, Fla., specializing in cumbia, reggae, and merengue music.  The Hector P. Garcia State Holiday Celebration held September 20 featured guest speaker Dr. José Limón, Director of the University of Notre Dame's Institute for Latino Studies.

Earlier this week, nursing students and faculty provided blood pressure, BMI, and blood sugar screenings during a health fair open to the public. In addition, the University’s Department of Music presented Viva la Guitarra and the South Texas Chamber Players, who entertained the community with old-time favorite Latin American tunes.

Upcoming events are:

  • Saturday, Sept. 28: Hispanic in Higher Ed: Inside Edition – Learn more about what undergraduate and graduate school is all about as a Hispanic STEM student  on  Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m.to noon  in the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom.  There will be a robotics competition, Hispanic student panels, and hands-on activities from various campus entities and organizations. 

 

  • Tuesday, Oct. 1: Alien Workers to U.S. Patriots - Dr. Pat Carroll, a Professor in the College of Liberal Arts, will present "Alien Workers to U.S. Patriots: Dr. Hector P. Garcia and the Reconstruction of Mexican American Identity in U.S. National Consciousness" on Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 2-3 p.m. in the O'Connor Building, Room 135.

 

  • Tuesday, Oct. 1, and Wednesday, Oct. 9: Hispanic Film Series- Films from a variety of countries around the world will be shown Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Center for Instruction, room 127, and Wednesday, Oct. 9, at 4:30 p.m. in Bay Hall 126.

 

  • Wednesday, Oct. 2: ¡Vivan Los Niños! – ¡Vivan Los Niños!, will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.  This delightful concert will feature young string players from the Early Childhood Development Center, the Corpus Christi Area Youth Orchestra, the Joe Garza Center and the Corpus Christi Independent School District orchestra programs.

 

  • Thursday, Oct. 3: Hispanic Farm Labor Communities in South Texas History – Mark and Christine Robbins' Oral History Project: Hispanic Farm Labor Communities in South Texas History will be held on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the University Center, Lone Star Ballroom 142A.

 

  • Oct. 7, through Friday, Oct. 11: FYI Writing Exhibit This exhibit will showcase the narratives of diverse students in the First Year Composition and First Year Seminar. The exhibits will be held Monday, Oct. 7, through Friday, Oct. 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Center, Legacy Hall.

 

  • Tuesday, Oct. 8: Loteria Join us for a game of Loteria (Mexican bingo) on Tuesday, Oct. 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the University Center Commons.

 

  • Wednesday, Oct. 9:  Read-a-Thon - Faculty, staff and students will read short excerpts of literary works by authors in Spanish and Spanish American Literature. The event will be held in the O'Connor Building, room135 from 12:35- 2 p.m.

 

  • Saturday, Oct. 12: Walk-a-Mole 5K Fun Run/Walk Join us at the 5K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 8-10 a.m. at the University Hike and Bike Trail, next to the Harte Research Institute. Registration begins at 7:15 a.m. The entry fee is $5 worth of canned goods per runner/walker, which will be donated to the Food Bank of Corpus Christi. Fill out the registration form at http://www.corpusroadrunners.com/2013/101213TACHEWalkAMole5K/Flyer.pdf and email it to andrea.montalvo@tamucc.edu prior to the race.
