CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The College of Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and representatives from the Marine Technology Society (MTS), Houston Section held a check presentation ceremony today (Friday, Aug. 23) to establish the MTS, Houston Section Endowed Scholarship at the University.

The MTS, Houston Section donated $25,000 that will provide scholarships to deserving full-time students who are working toward a bachelor’s degree with a focus in Marine Technology, Science, and Engineering.

“Scholarships are vital for attracting and graduating students interested in science and engineering programs at the Island University,” said University President Flavius Killebrew. “They also show the support of a community of people who believe in our students and are willing to invest in their success. We appreciate the Marine Technology Society stepping forward today to invest in the hard working students at the Island University.”

The scholarships also make it possible for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to continue offering advanced, research-oriented, educational programs in the fields that use tools such as the underwater rover, a 3-D printer, and an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

"While many students are enrolled in similar programs across the country, they don’t have the opportunity to gain these types of hands-on experiences until they get to their first job or graduate school,” said Dr. Frank Pezold, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering.  “Our students get to work with these high-tech tools and perfect these technologies as early as their freshmen year.”

With more than 800 members, the MTS Houston Section is the largest section of the MTS, the leading international community of ocean engineers, technologists, policy-makers, and educators. The society, in conjunction with the sections, hosts seminars and conferences throughout the year, awards scholarships to students, recognizes outstanding industry contributors, and encourages the advancement of knowledge and technical excellence.

“The MTS Houston Section is pleased to support the fine work Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is doing educating and preparing its students for careers in the offshore and marine industries,” said Brian Bearden, Chairman of the MTS Houston Section.  “This Endowed Scholarship is only part of MTS’s commitment to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Over the last three years, we have provided over $18,000 in scholarships available to A&M-Corpus Christi students who are members of MTS, and we will continue to contribute to both scholarship programs in the future.”

The national organization is dedicated to disseminating marine science and technical knowledge; promoting and supporting education for marine scientists, engineers, and technicians; advancing the development of tools required to explore, study, and utilize the oceans; and providing services that create a broader understanding of the relevance of the marine sciences to other technologies, arts, and human affairs.
