CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Valerie Ferdin, a senior mechanical engineering major, was announced on May 1 as the winner of the University’s first Islander Apprentice.

Jo Anna Benavides-Franke, Director of Career Services, presented Ferdin with $2,000 worth of prizes including an iPad Mini, an opportunity to job shadow with Rob Hall, Gulf Coast region Group Vice President at H-E-B, and a certificate for scuba lessons.

“I’m honored to be chosen as the winner of this competition,” said Ferdin. “This program has taught me to be more personable and marketable in a business environment.”

The Islander Apprentice was a two-month program designed by Career Services, in which contestants participated in two, separate month-long projects. During the first project, which ran from March 1-26, each team had to secure business deals with the community in an effort to show their Islander Spirit.

During the final stage of the challenge, each contestant was asked to prepare a newsletter, and each team was asked to prepare a PowerPoint presentation based on their experiences. The top winner was selected based on how well he or she met the final presentation requirements.

The other contestants were announced and received a gift package worth $90.

Career Services will be accepting applications in the fall for the next Islander Apprentice.
