A Slice of Pizza and Insight

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Ron Miller, the owner of a local Papa Murphy’s franchise pizza chain, was a guest speaker in Dr. Ben Blanco’s Retail Management class on February 27 in the O’Connor Building. For the past three years, Miller has come to speak to Dr. Blanco’s class, bearing free pizza and wisdom of owning one’s own franchise.

“Ron has the ability to share another aspect of business,” said Blanco. “He has been such an asset to this class.”

Miller spent three years searching for a suitable franchise and considered several different franchise businesses including tax services, day care, and then stumbled upon Papa Murphy’s.

 “I tasted their pizza and was sold,” said Miller.

After investing $300,000 into his first franchise business, Miller opened the doors of Papa Murphy’s “take-and-bake” pizzeria, on Saratoga Boulevard. Papa Murphy’s is the world’s largest take-and-bake company and has been excelling in providing fresh pizza ingredients on a daily basis for customers to take home and bake to their liking.

“People don’t like us to ruin their pizza,” said Miller. “We give customers the ability to cook their pizza the way they want it.”

Due to the lack of success with television marketing, Miller keeps his business alive through promotions and visits in the Corpus Christi School District and saturating athletic events with his product.  

“It is very beneficial learning about all the different aspects of franchising,” said Cody Orr, a junior general business major. “Sometimes it’s better going with a franchise rather than starting a business that has no name.”
