CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Fourteen teams of junior ROTC cadets from regional high schools took on a series of challenges during the Army ROTC Islander Battalion’s fourth annual “Islander Challenge” held Saturday, March 23, at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The event was Islander Battalion’s largest “Islander Challenge” ever.

KRIS/KZTV Sports Director/Sports Anchor Tyler Garrett was emcee for the opening ceremonies held on the Bay Hall Lawn. The event culminated with a timed sand obstacle course and closing ceremonies on the University Beach.

University supporters and families of the cadets cheered and clapped for their junior cadets during the competition. More than 120 junior ROTC cadets participated in three phases of challenges including an Army physical fitness test; rope bridge crossing; a log carry; an equipment carry; and orienteering, a test that requires map-reading, navigational, and compass skills to move quickly from one point to another over unfamiliar terrain.

First place winners were West Oso High School in the co-ed category and Rockport-Fulton High School in the all-male category. Both winners received the General Cavazos Trophy Award.

Competing schools, which could enter up to three all male or co-ed teams, included Alice High School; Aransas Pass High School; Carroll High School; LG Cigarroa High School in Laredo, Texas; Ray High School; Rockport-Fulton High School; Somerset High School in Somerset, Texas; Tuloso-Midway High School; and West Oso High School.
