CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Students preparing for final exams had the opportunity to relax, play with therapy dogs, and participate in other activities to help reduce stress during the “Paws on the Island” event held December 5 at the University Center.

The Mary and Jeff Bell Library, the University Counseling Center, and Paws Up Inc. teamed up to bring a stress-relieving environment to the students during “Reading Day,” a day when students have no classes, and can recharge for upcoming final exams. During the event, information on Counseling Center services was also available.

Volunteers from Paws Up Inc. provided students with four therapy dogs they could interact with for 15-minute sessions. According to event organizers, petting a dog can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and alleviate anxiety.  Students went outdoors to blow giant bubbles, use chalk to draw on the sidewalk, color in coloring books, decorate flip-flops, and play with Play-Doh.

Paws Up Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides animal assisted therapy in the Corpus Christi area.
