Oct. 23, 2020: Faculty and Staff - A Message from the President regarding Spring Break

Published: Oct 23, 2020 3:15 PM

Dear Islander Faculty and Staff,

At many times during the pandemic, I have expressed my gratitude toward everyone for keeping us moving forward and your commitment to our Island University. I have also said that my pride in you has never been stronger, and that remains true today as we continue evaluating and making necessary changes to our plans.

Continuing safe practices in the new year is at the forefront of our planning. Unfortunately, we must join universities around the country in eliminating Spring Break in 2021. It is a difficult choice but one that is in the best interests of our entire community. To accommodate this change, we are moving the start date for the spring semester and will begin classes on Monday, January 25. We will observe a one-day break from classes on Wednesday, March 17. Classes will end on Wednesday, May 5, and exams will begin on Friday, May 7. Commencement will take place on Saturday, May 15. Please refer to the revised academic calendar online for additional information.

After the winter break, the campus will open as planned on Monday, January 4. On Jan. 1, 2021, benefits eligible employees will receive two floating holidays in place of the Spring Break holiday. These days must be used within one year. More information will be forthcoming when plans are finalized.

Once again, thank you for your continued patience and understanding. Our fall semester has been very successful because of your cooperation, and I am grateful every day for your commitment to safety.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kelly M. Miller
