A Message from the President: Fall 2020 Commencement

Published: Dec 1, 2020 10:00 AM

Dear Islander Faculty & Staff,

This year presented many challenges, and I am certain all of us are extremely proud of our students’ determination and resilience as they worked toward the important milestone of graduation. Since March, campus leadership has monitored the pandemic and adjusted plans as needed with health and safety as a top priority. We hoped conditions would allow for a safe, in-person commencement celebration this fall. Although the number of active COVID-19 cases at the university remains low, positive case numbers continue to rise both regionally and nationally. As a result, we have decided to move the Fall 2020 commencement to a virtual format. No doubt this is disappointing to all of us, especially the graduates. However, the safety of all involved and the community at large remains our top priority.

We look forward to recognizing each of the graduates at our virtual ceremony through individual, personalized slides posted on our commencement web page at 10 a.m. on December 19. In addition, all Spring, Summer, and Fall 2020 graduates will be invited to participate in a future in-person commencement ceremony. Every graduate that wants to walk the stage for commencement will have an opportunity to do so as soon as it is safe.  No pandemic is going to take that away from them.

Thank you to each of you for the role you played in helping our graduates realize their dreams and obtain their degrees.  Despite the challenges, we continue to come together and do what we do best – educate students and provide an unparalleled commitment to their success.

Thank You,

Dr. Kelly M. Miller, Ph.D.
