Gustavo A. Barrera '94 is the Corpus Christi region President and CEO.  With more than 28 years of community banking experience, all with IBC Bank, Barrera’s knowledge and expertise have contributed to the overall growth and success of the Corpus Christi region and business community.

Mr. Barrera graduated and received his Bachelor of Business in Accounting & Finance from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi.  After graduation from college, Mr. Barrera began his career as an accountant with Carriage Services, Inc.  Shortly after, Barrera began his career at IBC as Credit Analyst in the commercial credit department in 1995.  He was promoted to Credit Manager and Bank Officer.  During his time as Credit Manager, Barrera continued to move up the ranks and was promoted to Assistant Vice President.  In 2002, Barrera was promoted to a Vice President and embarked on his lending career as a Commercial Lender. In 2008, Barrera was promoted to First Vice President and Head of Sales and Retail Group for the Corpus Christi region, while maintaining his lending duties.  Shortly after, in 2011, Barrera was promoted to Senior Vice President.  Recently in May 2021, Barrera was promoted to Executive Vice President.  In August 2021, the Board of Directors of IBC Bank-Corpus Christi named Mr. Barrera as President and CEO.  Mr. Barrera oversees the entire Corpus Christi region, with nine area branches, including locations in Corpus Christi, Rockport, Sinton, Portland, and Aransas Pass.  Mr. Barrera also serves as an Advisory Director for IBC Bank–Corpus Christi.

In keeping with the IBC philosophy of “We Do More,” Barrera also dedicates his time and efforts to numerous community organizations in the Coastal Bend.  He served as Board Chair for the Art Museum of South Texas and currently sits on their Board of Directors.  He is also Board Chair for the Islander Athletic Fund and sits on the board of the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi National Alumni Association. He has served on numerous boards including Mary McLeod Bethune Day Nursery, Inc., and is past president of the Kiwanis Club of Corpus Christi, Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi, Inc., Mother Theresa Shelter, Inc, and Co-Chair for the Coastal Bend Heart Walk.

Mr. Barrera is married to Jaime Nodarse Barrera and has three sons, Alejandro, David, and Santiago.  To relax, Mr. Barrera loves to travel with his loved ones, attend concerts, and enjoy time with family and friends.

History

The G. Russell Kirkland Distinguished Visiting Executive Lecture has been created by friends of the late Mr. G. Russell Kirkland and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to honor his distinguished service to the development of the University, the city of Corpus Christi, and South Texas. Mr. Kirkland was the Vice President of Development at Texas A&I at Corpus Christi and Corpus Christi State University from 1975 to 1978. Prior to joining the University, Mr. Kirkland was associated with Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith for 35 years, and was Vice President and manager of the Corpus Christi office. Mr. Kirkland was also Founder and Director of Parkdale State Bank. In addition, Mr. Kirkland served as President of the Little Theatre Corpus Christi, Corpus Christi Symphony, and was Director of First State Bank of Ingleside, KEDT-TV, and YMCA. Mr. Kirkland was a national director of the Navy League.
