Spirit & Traditions

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi traces its beginning back to 1947, when Ward Island became the home of the University of Corpus Christi with 312 students enrolled. In 1989, the University joined the A&M System and has since grown to five colleges. The Island University now has more than 12,000 students from across the nation and 50 countries.

The Island University

The University slogan is "The Island University". Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is the only university in the nation that is located on its own island.

From a fiesta to casino games, our yearly homecoming tradition spans an entire week. The Tip-Off Picnic, Lighting of the “I” Spirit Rally, and a Homecoming Pep Rally and Tailgate held downtown are just a few of the long-standing traditions. All of this is topped off with the grand finale Men’s and Women’s basketball games and naming of the Homecoming Court.

In addition to the traditional cap and gown, our graduation gear includes a fresh flower lei. When you receive your degree at commencement, you will turn your class ring around, with the name facing outward. This symbolizes that the graduate is now ready to face new challenges outside the University.

Islander Ring Ceremony & Ring Wish

Receive your Islander Ring in the presence of your friends, family and university dignitaries at the Islander Ring Ceremony. The bi-annual ceremony is a campus tradition for our students who have made it to their junior year. The Islander Ring symbolizes pride, achievement, and university spirit. Receiving your ring during the official Ring Ceremony signifies that you are close to becoming a distinguished member of the Islander Alumni Association. Until you graduate, you will wear your ring with the Islanders name facing toward you. Each ring recipient is given a sand dollar at their ring ceremony. Like a penny in a wishing well, this token is then tossed into the fountain at Woo Sung Lee Plaza during the Islander Ring Wish.

From the East, From the West, From the North, the South,
Alma Mater we praise your name.
As a fire in our hearts none shall ever doubt,
That your spirit is kept aflame.

All lifting their voices praising you.
