Silent moon, hazy dunes
(Seven Short Poems)

SILENT MOON, HAZY DUNES

on the way to the isle
I cross the paths of holy animals:

the owl is first
then the fox
finally the Egyptian scarab

I wonder what all of this means
silent moon over the hazy dunes
waves of the ocean chase waves

SOMETHING WILD

sky close to water
stars vanish in the fog

I worry for animals in the dunes
hills
high mountains

a gliding seagull
casts shadow on the bright moon

I think of Han Shan's mountain deer
like wind
she dwells among tall grass and pines

NUECES BAY CAUSEWAY

high
above
the harvest moon
the long-span bridge
soaring arching
diving
over

the boats
huddled in harbor
fleet

Santa Maria

roaring sea
climbs upon the rocks

AFTER THE RAIN

(Originally appeared in Borderlands 15, 2000)

the bay's empty
few clouds
burnished skyline
in clear air

a lone brown tanker
under the arch
of a new bridge
tying the city
to the open sea

red orange
yellow green
cerulean blue

rainbow after the squalll

FURTHER SOUTHEAST (JFK CAUSEWAY)
(Originally appeared in Borderlands 15, 2000)

magical is
this wandering road

gliding along
Laguna Madre
gently over the bridge
softly upon the sands
Padre Island

mysterious is
this night of two crescent moons

one swaying in the sky
one sailing in the water

 NIGHT AND DAY

sitting in silence
on the dock
on the bay

no stars
moon forgotten

crimson sun
ignites the horizon
ocean remains calm

WINTER RETURN (A MEMORY)

the wind twirls sand in the dunes
no traces
few scraps of wood

grand vastness between
the bay and the lake

I pause
to embrace the full moon

Corpus Christi, the Gulf of Mexico
and Leba, the Baltic Sea
