Cows that are injured or become sick during transport to the stockyards or slaughterhouse often become unable to stand.
They are referred to as "downers."
They are often pushed around with bulldozers into piles and are left to die

A downed cow with a broken neck is left to suffer at a Texas stockyard. Her neck was broken when she was forcibly separated from her calf in the marketing process.

A downed cow is left to suffer at a New York stockyard. She was dragged off a truck by a rope tied around her head - the other end of the rope was tied to a post and she was unloaded when the truck drove off.

At the slaughterhouse, cows are hung upside down, their throats are cut, and they are bled to death.

Smelling blood, this terrified cow waits in the knocking box just prior to being stunned and slaughtered.
