Focus on Expansion Task Force Charge

The Focus on Expansion Task Force will address expansion of programming and the corresponding expansion of physical plant/operations of the university. This group will coordinate the following initiatives:

• Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will experience a 50-100% growth over the next decade. A systematic plan needs to be developed for the expansion of A&M-Corpus Christi on the island and beyond Ward Island, including a plan for land acquisition. This group will consider, but not be limited to, the following elements: highlighting Phase II of the Performing Arts Center and the renovation of the Center for the Arts building into a Music Building; establishing college identities on the Island, including the construction of a College of Business building; establishing better pedestrian flow on the campus beyond the spine with special attention being paid to seating, shading, plantings, and additional food venues throughout the campus; establishing plans to expand the library, science and psychology laboratories, recreation/wellness facilities and to create a Faculty Club; developing a plan to identify both academic and support functions which will be permanently located off the island (i.e. art, nursing, and elements of finance and administration and institutional advancement, etc.); developing a corresponding plan to maintain connections with units located off the island so that a university relationship is sustained; conducting a feasibility study to add housing units on campus or near campus that are university owned and a long term plan to establish the feasibility of university ownership of the current housing units; conducting a study about transportation issues, parking, and land usage. After the broad parameters of the campus expansion have been identified, an external consultant should be engaged to assist in developing the new facilities master plan;

• Considering the THECB Regional Plan delineating popular majors not yet offered in South Texas and additional information about fields likely to have recruitment potential and a "fit" for the campus, develop a roadmap for program expansion and enhancement. Consideration should also be given to how technology can impact program delivery, market expansion, and support processes. The group should also recommend enrollment proportions of graduate/undergraduate students.
• Consider offering programs, services, and classes at non-peak times such as on weekends. Revisit the University calendar, when and how the university does business. Analyze summer school expansion and whether the university wants to offer programs and classes for different populations such as elder hostels, people in the community (specific classes they have requested), academic camps, etc.
• Develop a capital campaign to fund the excellence, engagement, and expansion thrusts of the university
• Develop a financial planning strategy for growth, in addition to the capital campaign.
