Programs
of Study
The History MA degree consists of a minimum of 36
graduate hours. Students who plan to continue with
their post-graduate studies at the doctoral level
are strongly encouraged to write a
thesis.
Required of
all students - 18 hours
HIST 5310 Historiography
HIST 5360 Applied History
One graduate course in U.S. history
One graduate course in European
or Latin American history
Two approved non-history graduate electives
Thesis route -
18 additional hours
9 additional hours in a designated field
(U.S., European, or Latin American)
3 hours designated History electives
6 hours master's thesis
Successfully defend thesis in oral examination
2 years of college-level work in a foreign
language
Non-thesis route
- 18 additional hours
9 additional hours in a designated field
9 hours designated History electives
Pass comprehensive written
examination
With prior approval
of the student's graduate committee, up to 6 hours
of 4000-level courses taken for graduate credit
will be accepted. Students may transfer up to 12
hours of graduate credit from regionally-accredited
institutions.
