Scholarships

A limited number of $1000 scholarships are available to candidates of the English Masters Program through the College of Liberal Arts. Most often, these scholarships are offered to students from out of state, which allows them to qualify for in-state tuition rates.

Graduate Assistantships

We have three half-time graduate assistantships, which traditionally have been reserved for first-year students. These positions (20 hours a week) come with benefits. Applications for these positions are submitted to the English Graduate Program coordinator and are provided in this handbook and online. They are due by March 15, preceding the beginning of course work.

Half-time positions you can apply for (include benefits):
• English tutor in the Tutoring and Learning Center
• Assistant and grader in Western Literature courses
• Assistant to the Coordinator of the First Year Writing Program [computer skills preferred]
• Professional writer, Department of Media and Computer Services [computer skills preferred]

Teaching Assistantships

Each year 6 - 8 new teaching assistantships with financial stipends and benefits are awarded to Masters students with 18 graduate hours completed in the discipline. T.A.s normally teach two sections of English Composition each semester. All first-year writing courses are taught in computer labs. Teaching assistants are expected to enroll in 6 seminar hours each semester of appointment (this is to help enrich our courses with your second-year and teaching experience, as well as help you with content and methodology as you teach).

Other University Employment

First Year Seminar Leaders

English graduate students can also be employed as First-year Seminar Leaders by the University Core Curriculum Program. First-year seminars are linked to large lecture courses in a variety of disciplines. Leaders help students integrate the material in the "triad" or "tetrad" of courses they are taking, as well as develop writing and thinking skills in the transition to college-learning. Leaders also assist in grading duties for the large classes.

Training for first-year seminar leaders is required during the first summer session prior to the Fall of employment.

For more information contact Dr. Susan Wolff Murphy.: susan.murphy@tamucc.edu or call 361-825-2640.

Part-time graders are employed for Western Literature courses. Arrangements can be made directly with Western Literature professors or through the Coordinator, English Graduate Program.

For more information contact Dr. Cristina Kirklighter at cristina.kirklighter@tamucc.edu or call 361-825-2263.
