Welcome to 5361: Basic Writing Theory and Pedagogy

Writing

  • Reflection on your history with writing & learning, developmental education, etc.
  • If you had to say today, what is your philosophy of teaching & learning?
  • Share & discuss in small groups, as a class
  • Turn in to me--week one reading response

Theories of teaching & learning:

  • Strickland & Strickland, "Education Begins with Philosphy" (copy)
  • Traditional/Transmission Philosophy vs. Contructivist/Transactional Philosophy

Read & present:

  • NCTE "Beliefs about the Teaching of Writing"
  • I've picked the ones I think are most controversial and/or related to basic writing. I'll discuss a few:
    • Everyone has the capacity to write, writing can be taught, and teachers can help students become better writers
    • People learn to write by writing
    • Writing is a process
    • Writing grows out of many different purposes
    • Composing occurs in different modalities and technologies
    • Assessment of writing involves complex, informed, human judgment

In groups, you will read & present the key points of one section of this document:

  1. Writing is a tool for thinking
  2. Conventions of finished and edited texts are important to readers and therefore to writers
  3. Writing and reading are related
  4. Writing has a complex relationship to talk
  5. Literate practices are embedded in complicated social relationships

You will post your group's notes here:
