The characteristics of a traditional family are one father, one mother and one or more children. The father usually works to bring home the money, the mother usually cooks, cleans and takes care of the child and the child usually goes to school. Married couple, minority of the public its heterosexual.
2. Know family forms Traditional Family- Look above Cohabitating Families- not married but live together could have children. Single-parent Household- 60% of children experience this. 25% of all households. Blended Step Families- families brought together by marriage. Lesbian/Gay Families- less then one percent of U.S. usually raising child. Grandparent led families- families led my grandparents. Foster Family- Adopted children in boarding homes.

Traditional Marriage: An institution that give privilege and prestige to men. Economic Unit. It does not exist notion of romantic love.
Companionate: Emphasis on affection, friendship and sexual gratification
Individualized: Gender Roles are more flexible and open communication.
5. Know why marriage and family are referred to as shell institutions.
Like western tradition, marriage and family wasn't based upon intimacy, but finacial stability and keeping family tradition "arranged marriage"
6. Be able to describe what a pure relationship is and how that type of relationship relates to the family and democracy.
A pure relationship is based upon emotional communication where the rewards derived from such communication are the bases for the relationship to continue, it's diffrent from a traditional family depending upon process of active trust and opening one's self to the other. In a democracy everyone is equal, with mutual respect, and can't work without trust.
7. Be able to describe the trends in divorce/family instability It effects the children/child which can result in the child's grades dropping. Parents may also begin competing with each other over who gets the child and also begin questing each others parenting styles. It gives the child more freedom by taking advantage of a single parent house hold.
8. Be able to discuss how changes in mortality rates affected marriages and parent-child relationships. After the loss of a spouse he or she remarries it creates a blended family. Usually resulting in the step parent buying their love, if both parents die then it turns into a grandparent led home, or foster home.
9. Know the trends in non-marital birth rates -People of society have become more comfortable with their sexuality, therefore, premartial birth rates have increased.
10. Be able to discuss how functionalists view the relationship between the changes in family structures and the social problems. -Traditional families serve as a function to keep poverty & dropout rates low. Poverty rates both parents-10% single parent-66%. Change in family strcuture lead to increase in social problems (poverty/dropout).
11. Be able to discuss why Anthony Giddens argues that gay and lesbian couples are revolutionizing relationships. Giddens explains that gay and lesbehonest couples are revolutionizing relationships by saying that a person's seuality has norhing to do with being able to have a family. A school with more involvement in PTA and Parent teacher Conferences came from a higher income. As Lareau explained in the Reading. How Colton, a low income school and Prescott, a high income school; teachers to parent relationship were conducted. Colton's parents were not involve as much, or had any connecting to the Teacher curriculum. The parents did not have any ideal, or connecting to the child school work. While Prescott's parent to teacher were more into the child schooling. Calling, going to PTA meetings. The reason it vary is because the Prescott's parents were able to make their own schedule, transportation. While Colton's parents may have been high school drop outs, work two jobs and did not have as much time as Prescott parent have. -----Michelle Price
14. Be able to discuss the myth associated with workers and the corresponding realities that challenge those myths. The consequences that affects the educational level and performance of kids is explained by the family school relationships and the child's background. Because middle class parents are most likely to negotiate and allow their kids to participate and question them, they give them educational benefits.Te same way middle class parents perspective is that school education is teaches and parents responsibility so they will contribute with their kids performance, poor and working class families are more likely to give orders to the kids and don't hear them. In the same way they see education as teachers' responsibility. This are negative educational consequences. For these kids. According to the family-school relations kids have good educational consequences or not. ----Maria
