University Academic Standards Grievance Committee Preliminary Matters:

Committee consists of eight persons by name: six faculty members and two students. The faculty members were chosen by the Faculty Senate Committee on Committees from a pool already composed for that purpose for the academic year. The pool includes the members of the Faculty Senate Academic Affairs Committee and a designated number of tenured faculty members. The students have been selected from a pool established by the Student Government.

No member of the appointed committee is involved in the case before the committee or has withdrawn from consideration of the case.

Letters of notification of the hearing went out to members of the Committee and to the student and faculty member concerned. The letters indicated the time, date and place of the hearing. The letters notified all concerned where the student grade appeal file could be reviewed. The letters notified the student and faculty member concerned of their right to be accompanied and represented by another. The letters notified all concerned that the burden of proof was on the student. Date(s) of letters: _______________________________________

A quorum is present. A quorum consists of four faculty members and one student member of the Committee including the Chair.

The student understands that the proceedings are not a judicial proceeding and rules of evidence are not applicable.

The student was asked if he/she objected to any member of the Committee sitting on his/her case. (NOTE: the student has no right to preemptory challenge or challenge for cause. However the Committee may want to recess for guidance from the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs if the student=s reasons for making the objection seem to cause doubt in the Committee's mind as to the appropriateness of continuing. This decision will be made in closed session by majority vote.)
